La Playa interviews Cesc Bas

31/03/2025

La Playa TV,a video and podcast platform dedicated to promoting surf culture and all its variations along the Mediterranean coast, brings a new “salty story” this week. This time, the journey takes us to Barcelona to meet Cesc Bas, one of the most influential figures in the evolution of Stand Up Paddle (SUP) in Catalonia.

After the 2007 economic crisis, Cesc was laid off from his job as a Financial Director. With his severance pay, he set off on a journey around the world in search of waves. One of his stops was Costa Rica, where he saw a surfer using a stand-up paddleboard to catch waves with a paddle for the first time. That day changed his life. He immediately thought about how useful such a board would be in the Mediterranean, allowing people to enjoy the sea all year round.

This idea led him to create an inflatable stand-up paddleboard brand that was easy to transport, practical, and lightweight. Thus, SPS (Sant Pol Surf) was born, named after the beach where he used to surf. It became the first Spanish brand of stand-up paddleboards. The project started small, supplying boards to Catalan surf schools, but demand quickly grew, crossing borders. Today, SPS is distributed in Portugal, Italy, and Germany.
