Camino de Santiago by Paddle Surf: a journey through history and nature
Can you do the Camino de Santiago… on a paddle board?
Yes — and it’s one of the most unique and surprising ways to experience this ancient route. Thanks to the initiative by Ilinx SUP, it’s possible to follow the legendary Sea-River Camino of the Arousa Sea and the Ulla River, also known as the Traslatio Route, gliding over the water between islands, mussel platforms and legends.
This route is inspired by the story of how the body of the Apostle James was transported by sea from Palestine to Galicia by his disciples, sailing up the Arousa estuary and the Ulla River until reaching Padrón. Today, this journey can be relived from a new perspective — on a SUP board — blending sport, nature, and tradition.
5 days of adventure, 79 kilometers of excitement
The trip begins in O Grove and covers 54 km on a paddle board along the estuary, passing places like Illa da Toxa, Cambados, Illa de Arousa and the Torres del Oeste in Catoira. Along the way, participants stamp their Nautical Credential and receive logistical support both from land and water.
The final stage is on foot: 25 km walking from Padrón to Santiago Cathedral, following the same path as pilgrims on the Portuguese Way.
At the end of the route, you’ll receive three official recognitions: the Compostelana, the Pedronía, and the certificate of the Sea-River Jacobean Route.
More than just paddling
Beyond sport, this is a shared journey. You’ll paddle among mussel farms, hop from island to island, discover hidden corners and share the path with other SUP and nature lovers. Each stage is shaped by the wind, tides, and the pace of the group — making every experience unique.
It all begins with a traditional Galician welcome dinner: octopus, wine, and a good conversation to meet the group before setting off.
Ilinx SUP has designed this adventure for those who already have basic SUP experience and are looking for something different: an unhurried journey, away from the crowds, full of soul.
